What is the difference between on the one hand human beings and on the other hand primates and mammals in general? This recurring question has received many answers. In fact, the fundamental assumptions of most human and social sciences implies an answer to the question: consciousness, the social, practice, discourse etc. And so do the speculative assumptions of psychoanalysis: the unconscious and the death drive, this “beyond the pleasure principle”. However, why is the drive conceived of as a death drive and what does the “beyond” of the pleasure principle mean? And why did these speculative and highly controversial concepts seem necessary to Freud? To suggest an answer, we need to focus on what assumptions Freud deemed necessary to leave behind. Rather than providing us with answers, the concept of the death drive reminds us of unanswered questions concerning man’s being.
Raising these questions is Kirsten Hyldgaard, Ph.D. in philosophy and lecturer at the Danish School of Education, Aarhus University.
